India's Emerging Missile Inventions

Pre Independent India:

India has a missile history since form 18th century.

Hyder Ali and his Tippu Sulthan used iron rockets called Mysorean Rockets effectively against the British East India company. He trained a troop called rocket men to launch 5 -10 rockets simultaneously In the war.

It was the world's first use of rockets in modern war. Later British India developed this rocket technology further.


Post-Independent India

Democratic India's missile programme comes back in the 1950s when Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister Of India and Dr D. S. Kothari was the Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister. In 1958, the government of India constituted a team of Indian scientists called the Special Weapons Development Team to research guided missile weapons development. The government of independent India highly focused on developing Missiles.

Later this special weapons development team shifted to Hyderabad and it’s later renamed as Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL). Its first anti-tank missile was a totally endogenous product, which was successfully test-fired.

the project laid the foundation of India’s missile programme. Later on so many missiles like Prithvi (Ship-based Anti-ship Ballistic Missile ) Prithvi I was one of the first missiles developed under Government of India's IGMDP. Launched in February 1988, Prithvi It is a single-stage, liquid-fuelled missile. A surface to surface missile, it has a range of 150 km and a mounting capability of 1000 kg. It was inducted into the Indian Army in 1994.

Latest Milestones Reached by India In the last 45 days, India had claimed that they have successfully tested 12 Missiles, sending strong messages to neighbouring countries. In the last six to seven weeks, the DRDO has carried out more than a dozen successful trials of different weapon systems including the Shaurya strategic missile, Nag anti-tank guided missile, BrahMos The extended Range missile system, Hypersonic Missile Technology Demonstration Vehicle and the Rudram 1 anti-radiation missile system.

In a demonstration of its combat readiness in strategic sea lanes around India, the Indian Navy on Friday released a video of an anti-ship missile destroying a sinking ship with "deadly accuracy" somewhere in the Arabian Sea.
